For most college applicants the essay or personal statement is perhaps the most vexing of the application requirements in the application process. This is where you need to dig deep and bare your intellectual soul for all of the world to see. Well, it really isn’t that bad. In fact, with a little time and effort, writing a college essay can be a simple and rewarding experience. Use the following 5 steps to keep your writing process as clean and uncomplicated as possible:

Step 1. Take it easy.
Be assured: You’re going to make it. It’s easy to become overwhelmed when you look at the project as one staggering pile of work, but in reality, if you take each stage as it comes, the paper will come together quite naturally. Word limits (typically 500) can be a point of stress for many students. This concern, however, should not be worried over in the early stages of writing. The truth is there are hardly any college admission officers who would be interested in counting the words of your essay. It’s merely expected that the essay fall somewhere in range of the requested limit. Ultimately, what matters most is that you convey your message clearly and succinctly—which directs us to Step 2.

Step 2. Map it out.
Begin by thinking of a topic (within required parameters) that you know you could write about. Think of something you could imagine holding a long conversation about. Regarding that topic, work out a statement, or thesis, to defend. You can begin outlining your paper by writing down four premises or subtopics that support your thesis. Producing such an outline is tremendously helpful. It allows you to construct your paper from a birds-eye view. And the more thoughtfully you outline, the less you have to labor over the writing stage.

Step 3. Write it up.
Now, with your outline in hand, you can begin to write. This is where the benefit of your outline comes in: You really don’t have to concern yourself with structure. You merely have to follow the directions charted in the outline. The rest is just talking with your fingers. Don’t worry about writing over the word limit. Just take it one section at a time, and write as much as you feel is necessary to complete each section. You’ll find that it is much easier to pare down an oversized essay than it would be to puff up an undersized one.

Step 4
1000
. Put it away.
After you have finished writing your first draft, take a break for a couple of weeks. Let your mind settle. It does a world of good to pull away from the paper that you spent several hours getting used to staring at.

Step 5. Tighten it up.
When you return to the paper for editing, don’t be surprised to discover glitches that you had never noticed before. This was the point of taking that break. Work through your draft and make the adjustments that will strengthen your overall message. (It also helps to have a friend proofread for typos and grammatical errors that you are not seeing.) And then you can look at the word count. If you are close enough to the requested limit, then you’re fine. If you are clearly over the limit, take a second look at what you have, and determine whether any of your content is not necessary to your main point. Anything unnecessary, no matter how well written, should be clipped out to keep your paper tight and within the assigned parameters. The goal for a good essay is to say as much as you can, as well as you can, in as few words as you can.

And that’s it! If you faithfully follow these 5 steps, you can cut most of the chaos and confusion out of your essay writing experience. Of course, this doesn’t rule out hard work and creative thought, but it sure helps them happen a lot more easily!

The National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) recommends that high school counselors work with no more than 100 students. Most public high school counselors have a student load of at least 350 students. On average, high school counselors spend 38 minutes helping students with the college search, applications, and admissions process.

Educational consultants are not associated with a high school or college. They have the time, training, and expertise to provide individual attention to students with their college search, applications and essays, financial aid and scholarships, and the college admissions process.

Here are five reasons why hiring an educational consultant to work with your high school student might be the best investment you ever made:

1. Educational consultants understand the college admissions process and visit colleges and universities regularly to discover what makes one school different from another. They meet with college admissions officers at each school so they know about the continuous changes that take place on individual campuses.

2. Educational consultants help your student find colleges that are a good fit, not just a big name. They want your student to be successful in the college admissions process and to have a variety of schools from which to choose. They know that students have been bombarded with all kinds of information from schools. After a while, each college begins to look and sound alike. They help families separate the hype from the facts.

3. Educational consultants are able to work successfully with your student because they do not have the emotional investment that parents do. They provide reliable college information and objective advice. They give your family another opinion and try to make the college admissions process as stress-free as possible.

4. Educational consultants know that applying to college and college admissions can be a time for students to discover themselves. Students learn to assess their strengths and weaknesses. They determine what it is they want out of a college experience. This helps them with the college search and encourages students to make
1000
better college decisions.

5. Educational consultants assist students with their applications and essays. They brainstorm topics that will enable your student to write the most compelling essays that will strengthen their applications. They encourage students to consider topics that have real meaning for them and will convey their personality to an admissions committee.

The personal statement is your opportunity to give the admissions committee a sense of the person behind all the grades and test scores. Many of the other applicants are likely to have similar academic credentials, but none has your particular experience, background, or outlook. A strong personal statement can set you apart from other candidates. Remember, the admissions committee is looking for reasons to accept you, and you can make a strongly favorable impression with a thoughtful, well written statement.

While it may seem to you like an afterthought or a chore to be dispensed with as quickly as possible, nothing could be further from the truth. This is your best opportunity - short of a personal interview - to convey a sense of who you are, what is important to you, and why you would be an outstanding student.

Step 1: Interview yourself
Write short answers to a bunch of the following questions. Keep track of which ideas keep popping up, and when you seem to be repeating yourself. Limit yourself to one or two paragraphs so that you can answer as many of these as possible.

* What experiences do you like talking about the most? What has been the most interesting, intriguing, and exciting part of your life – why, and what did you learn from it?
* Discuss an activity or experience that has helped you to clarify your long-term academic goals.
* Name a class or internship that you have taken to develop expertise in your major field of study.
* Describe a person who has shaped your values or beliefs.
* In five years, where do you see yourself working and what do you envision yourself doing?
* Discuss a need of society that you hope to address in your career Use statistics and other published resources to document the magnitude of the problem.
* Describe your hometown and explain its impact on your beliefs or values.
* Discuss an obstacle that you’ve had to overcome to achieve your academic goals.
* Write me a letter, and tell me everything you do, your personal history, and what matters to you.
* What do you enjoy doing?

Step 2: Start writing your essay
In many ways, writing a personal statement is
1000
a 180-degree turn from what you’re used to doing in college. You have been trained to write rather staid, formal, academic papers in which you know the format and what is expected of you, and the challenge lies in researching the topic at hand. In crafting a personal statement you are the world’s leading expert on the topic, but must create the method of conveying this information to the committee.

With that very general advice in mind, here are more specific do’s and don’ts for writing a personal statement:
DO

* Write from your gut. You’re used to writing from your head. Don’t let your head make it up. Listen to your gut, and get it down.
* You can’t tell them everything. Have a few main points you want to get across, and let them find out the rest of your story in your resume, interview, letters of recommendation, and other elements of your application.
* When you decide on the main points and stories you want to tell, answer these questions: What is the point of the story you’re telling? What do you need to include to tell it well? What isn’t necessary?

DON’T

* Don’t be flowery in your prose
* Don’t refer to me/I too many times
* Don’t use this as a resume in narrative form. You should only talk about those accomplishments that are directly germane to the subject at hand. Let them find out about your other activities through the other elements of your application.
Click here to find more Do’s and Don’ts(Best tips for college admission essay writings I’ve ever seen.
Step 3: Read it
By now you should have a pretty much complete first draft of your statement. But it is far away from the end. First read through what you’ve written slowly and try to read it from someone else’s point of view. Make sure it’s easy to read and not confusing, make sure you’ve said everything you want to say and not under or oversold yourself.

Next get other people to read it, mainly your family, friends, teachers and anyone else who you think will be able to give you a good opinion. As well as checking for spelling and grammar mistakes, they will be able to tell you if they think there is anything you’ve missed out.

Also show it to head of year or career advisers, people like this will have seen a lot of statements, and have a good idea what they should sound like.

You could also get people on the internet to look at your statement, and see what they think.

Hopefully by looking at your statement again and showing to other people you should have a whole bunch of changes to make to your original statement. Before making these changes, save a copy of your original statement so you can go back to it if you need too. Keep making changes, showing people your statement, and making more changes.

Tips From Free College Admission Essays

College admission can be stressful for students who want to secure a spot in their preferred course or school. Aside from selecting the best college that suits their needs and career path, students also need to ensure that they can meet the admission requirements for the colleges that they have chosen. The pressure not only comes from passing the entrance exams but also from writing a good college admission essay. This is where most students get stuck and are at a loss on how to proceed. If you’re really bogged down in your admission essay, you can use free college admission essays to give you some ideas on how to write well, in a way that the college admissions office will remember you despite hundreds of other applicants.

Of course, you need to take care of the other application requirements, such as the college application form, your high school transcript, recommendation from your teachers and guidance counselor, and your SAT and ACT scores. But the deal breaker, most of the times, is your college admission essay. You should look at you admission essay as your ace in the hole. It helps you introduce yourself to the admissions committee in a more effective and unique way. Perhaps that is why students are more pressured to get the essay right. Too much pressure, however, is no longer good, as most students end up having writer’s block. One way to overcome this is to look at free college admission essays and from there, you can get some tips on how to write one that will raise your chances of getting accepted.

Essay writing tips

Don’t be just a copycat; your college admission essay should be as unique as your personality and your application. You have to consider the things you would like to say about yourself that are relevant to the college you’re applying to and the course that you’re planning to take. What this implies is that you should have done a lot of thinking about the career path that you’re considering and that you have a fair idea of what you’re getting into. College admission officials want to know the sincerity of your intention in getting your education from their institution, and showing that you have the skills, aptitude, and attitude to meet their requirements and standards will take you closer to your goal. Of course, you do need to make a good impression
1000
, but before that, you should also ensure that your intention and drive to get into college is in itself impressive.

Spirit alone isn’t going to get you into college. But once you do have the right spirit, all you need to do is to translate that into words for your essay. Here, free college admission essays can help you get the words that you need to make that translation. If you’re short on words, let those sample essays give you tips how to express yourself better. You’ll then find that writing is always easier once you know what to say. For that, you can have a clear idea of what you want from the college your applying to and how that college can help you excel in the career path that you’ve chosen.

One of the difficult parts in writing a college admission essay is deciding on a good topic to write about. As these essays can make or break your college application, the pressure builds up that you might turn into a panicked wreck. But deciding what to discuss won’t be so difficult if you keep in mind what the college admission officials are looking for. They are not looking for a Pulitzer Prize winning essay, though it would be good if you could come up with one. What they’re looking for is your unique, personalized, and organized expression in your essay. There are sample college application essays that can give you good ideas, but don’t forget that it would still boil down to your viewpoint and opinion on what a good topic would be.

How to discuss a topic

There are colleges that make things easier for you. They send you specific topics to write about and also a section to write about yourself and the reasons for your college application. It’s made easier since you have topics to write about, but that is not the end of that. How you write about these topics will be the deciding factor for your essay. You can use sample college application essays to see how some topics can be approached and answered. From them, you can also get some tips on idea presentation and organization. Always remember that it’s you who is making the application, so it should be you who should appear on the essay. What that means is that your essay should contain what you actually think and believe in. It’s fine to show off your knowledge, but you should also show how that knowledge affects your beliefs and daily life. You’re not simply asked to list down what you know, you’re also asked of your honest and informed opinion on a certain topic. What they want to see is your personality, critical thinking, and your writing and organizational skills.

For open-ended topics, deciding on what to write about would be more difficult. The suggestion is to write something that is close to your heart. Write something that you’re passionate about. By doing so, your real personality would show in your essay, and your tone would be more confident and convincing. But don’t forget to relate this passion to your application and the course you’re planning to take
1000
. Your admission essay is not just a writing exam; it’s also meant to gauge how well you fit into the college and the course program. If you can find ways to connect your passion to the course you’re applying for, that shows admission officials that you can easily use that passion to your studies. You can find several sample college application essays online that shows how that can be done.

Whatever topic you may end up writing, never forget to show the real you, your critical thinking, and writing skills. Once you achieved that in your essay, you have a pretty good chance that you’ll make it to your chosen course or university.

Parents’ Guide To School Entrance Exams

With so many school entrance exams out there, the acronyms seem to make no more sense than a pile of Scrabble tiles. How do you sort through all the letters to find out which test matters and how to help your child prepare?

Start with your child’s college or post-graduate goals to determine which tests are essential. Standardized entrance tests typically measure students’ writing abilities and skills at reasoning verbally and mathematically. Exams vary depending on the degree test-takers plan to earn. Admissions committees often use the scores as part of the entire application package as a way to objectively compare students, who come from different educational backgrounds. However, the importance of test scores varies widely by school, and you should check out how much they matter.

-To Get into College (Undergraduate)
U.S. colleges generally accept two standardized tests designed to show which students are ready for academic life after high school. The Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT Reasoning) (collegeboard.com) measures ability in math, critical reading and writing. The Educational Testing Service offers the test for a fee of $45 for domestic test-takers. International test-takers must pay an additional $26. Scores range from scale of 200 to 800 per section. Students may re-take the SAT, but colleges will receive scores from all test dates.

Hour-long SAT subject tests are available in literature, history, math, science and foreign languages. Scores range from 200 to 800. Language tests cost $40, and the fee for each other subject test is $29. Check with the admissions staff at the schools your child is considering to see if they accept results of the SAT subject tests.

To check out the SAT, try a FREE test.

While the SAT Reasoning exam measures student aptitude, another test called the ACT evaluates both skill and knowledge. The ACT (actstudent.org) uses multiple choice questions to test knowledge in English, math, reading and science, with an optional essay-writing segment. Test-takers can earn from 1 to 36 points on each part; the total score is an average of the section results. Domestic test-takers must pay a $32 fee to
1000
take the ACT without the writing section, which costs an extra $15. International test-takers must pay an additional $26 fee. Students may re-take the test and decide which scores to send to colleges.

-To Get into Graduate School
Like college admissions tests, entrance exams for graduate and professional schools measure reasoning ability and proficiency in writing. Test-takers may also have to demonstrate subject knowledge.

Graduate school applicants generally take the general Graduate Record Examination (GRE) (ets.org) and one of eight subject tests in literature, math and science - depending on the requirements of the school. The general test includes verbal, quantitative and writing sections. The score range for the general test is 200-800 (0-6 scale score for analytical writing). The general test costs $160 in the U.S. International students pay about $190 with the fee - varying slightly according to region. Each subject test costs $140 in the U.S. and $160 everywhere else. Students may cancel their scores at the end of the test to prevent the results from being submitted to graduate schools. They may also re-take the GRE, but ETS will report all non-canceled scores earned within five years.

To check out the GRE, click try a FREE test.

-To Get into Business School
To enter Masters of Business Administration programs, students take the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) (gmac.com), which includes an analytical writing section, verbal segment and quantitative portion. Scores range from 200 to 800. The GMAT costs $250. Students may have their scores deleted and re-take the test, but reports to business schools will reflect all cancellation requests.

To check out the GMAT, click try a FREE test.

- To Get into Medical School
Applicants to medical school take the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) (aamc.org), which includes sections on science, verbal reasoning and essay writing. The test costs $230 (international test site additional $65). Scores range from 1 to 15, and applicants may cancel them at the end of the exam. Students may re-take the MCAT up to three times per year.

-To Get into Law School
Law school applicants take the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) (lsac.org). Prospective students must demonstrate skill in reading comprehension, analysis and logical reasoning. Applicants may take the LSAT up to three times in two years. The test costs $132, and scores range from 120 to 180. Applicants may re-take the test, but law schools will see all non-canceled scores. Some law schools average the scores from several test dates while others take only the best result.

To check out the LSAT, click law school entrance exam.

While admissions exams measure aptitude and knowledge students have acquired long before test day, applicants can learn strategies to increase their scores.

Three Reasons To Not Stress Over The College Admissions Process

Three Reasons To Not Stress Over The College Admissions Process

It’s easy to get caught up in the madness of the college application process. With so much paperwork to fill out, so many deadlines to meet and so much pressure to get accepted into the college of your choice, even the most laid back student can get stressed out. We try to maintain an even keel at The College A Team, but sometimes, even we get caught up in the frenzy, because a lot is riding on our students’ application essays.

But what is there really to be stressed about? What is “riding” on your college application? It is important to work diligently toward your goals and to try to get into a college that is the right fit for you, but sometimes you have to take a step back, take a deep breath and let your scattered brain relax for a minute. There is no reason to worry so much about the things you can’t control. No matter what happens over the next few months of the college admissions season, you are going to be just fine.

If you still feel stressed by the college admission process, consider the three bits of wisdom below. They may change your perspective on the whole process and put your mind at ease, at least until the next deadline you have to meet rolls around.

You are the customer. You call the shots: Colleges have a strange business model. Their admissions officers spend the fall visiting high schools, trying to convince students to apply to their college. Then they spend the winter rejecting a good portion of those same students they recruited. Can you think of another business that makes you apply to spend $150,000 at their store?

The truth is, colleges need students more than students need colleges. They have a staff to pay and a campus to maintain. They have a reputation to uphold and donors to keep happy. They need you for the contributions you can make to the campus community, the tuition money you will pay and future donations you will make to the endowment. If they reject you, then they don’t deserve your business.

Admissions officers want to admit you: You may have a vision in your head of what a typical admissions officer is like: pretentious, judgmental, someone who casts down judgment from on high, like a sadistic Roman emperor. They’re nothing like th
1000
at. In fact, admissions officers can be some of the nicest people you’ll ever meet. They are regular people who entered the field because they like students and want to help their school build a great class. There is no reason to be intimidated by them.

Admissions officers read every application thoroughly and look for reasons to admit applicants, not reasons to reject them. They will read your admissions essay twice and consider how it complements the rest of your application. They’re not there to put you down. They’re there to give your application a fair shake.

Your second-choice college is probably as good of a fit as your first choice: You will be disappointed if you get rejected from your first-choice school, but your second and third-choice schools are probably as good of a fit for you, if not a better one. You won’t have the same exact student experience, but you will have most of the same opportunities available to you. That’s because the most important part of your education is you. Your education is 20 percent what your school offers and 80 percent what you make of it.

It’s also not worth getting into your “reach” school if you are going to struggle with the academic workload. The most important part of college is growing as a person and graduating with a degree. Failing out is an expensive mistake – if only for the tuition money. At the College A Team, we would rather see a student graduate with honors from a mid-level, Tier 1 liberal arts school than struggle for four years at an Ivy League school. Forget the school that rejected you and go ahead and be an important part of a school that did want you. Four years from now, you’ll be happy you did.

The admissions letter or essay is often weighed just as heavily as the other elements of your application, if not more so. Why? The admissions letter allows admissions officers to learn more about you and your personality than is shown through your test scores. Additionally, the admissions letter shows your critical thinking and writing skills, which are important for college.

The Topic

When selecting a topic, it is important that you choose one that will allow you to show your personality, why you are a good candidate for the college, allow you to demonstrate your writing abilities, and answer the questions put forth on the application. Simple, right? It’s not an easy process, but it can feel more manageable if you break it into smaller steps.

Choose a topic that you are familiar and comfortable with. This is not the time to research a new subject. Examples of topics that might work include an experience from your past, a hobby, or an issue of personal importance. Choosing a topic that you’re comfortable with is particularly important if you’re feeling unsure of your writing skills or find writing the admissions letter to be particularly challenging. This will help build your overall confidence.

Develop an Outline

When writing the admissions letter, you need to accomplish two things. First, write a letter that demonstrates an understanding of writing basics. This means your admissions letter will have an introduction, body, and conclusion, and will follow a logical path from one section to the next. The other essential thing you letter must do is answer the questions set forth by the school.

Create an outline for your admissions letter using the basics of writing an essay. You’ll need an introduction, a body, and a conclusion for the letter. Open the admissions letter with something interesting, such as a quote, intriguing fact, or question. If you can engage your reader immediately, he or she will want to continue reading.

The body of your college admissions letter will cover the most important parts of the letter, showing your uniqueness as an applicant and answering questions. This part will require careful planning. Finally, the conclusion will bring your admissions letter to a logical close.

To ensure that all the important parts of the letter are included and to help you organize your thoughts, create an outline of your admissions letter. Ensure that everything is included that you need and wish to highlight.

Draft and Rewrite

Very rarely will a first draft of an admissions letter be the version that you use for your college application. Good writing is a process of writing and rewriting. Allow yourself plenty of time to outline, draft, and rewrite your admissions letter.

Your college admissions letter is an important piece of the college application, and could mean the difference between an acceptance and a rejection. By following a few simple steps and allowing yourself enough time to work on the letter, you can greatly increase your chances of earning that acceptance.

Your resume should be viewed and handled as if it is an airline ticket to your destination of choice. This may just be a piece of paper with words on it, and it may not reveal who you are personally but it is the only means by which you are going to get to the interview (your destination) so in that regard it is just as important as the interview is. Therefore you need to use this document to gain the reader’s trust and not provide any source of hesitation.

As a former employer I can tell you that when I was hiring I often hoped there were mistakes or things that just didn’t strike me right in the massive stacks of resumes that I would have to go through for different positions. These would allow me to toss that applicant out of sight and out of mind, moving through the pile faster, and narrowing down the interview pool. So these should not be view as mainly a way to stand out in a good way, but rather a way to not stand out in a bad way. No grammar errors, missing punctuation, funny words/wordings, contrived language, outlandish claims! Simply put what you are on paper in a concise, correct, logical form that doesn’t sound like a sell job but rather like an ‘about the author.’

That said it is helpful to not appear robotic. It is really the blend of no mistakes and the subtle yet unmistakable personal flair that people added to their resume that resounded with me and got them an interview. So how is this done? Well be honest! If you are hesitant to put something in because you see the potential for misunderstanding, then don’t put it in! If you can’t answer all the questions that come to your mind concerning an entry then its best to leave it out.

So to help you understand what I am talking about when I say personal flair or touch let me give you an example. Employers value a good work-ethic right? Well most everyone knows that and I can’t tell you how many times that I read the words ‘I possess a strong work-ethic,’ and nothing else! You need to explain yourselfsomething that proves that statement such as ‘possess strong work ethic, missed only 5 days in 3 years of work, was voted most valuable employee 3 times, and was counted on to assume more responsibility when bosses were out of town.’
