Ivy League Prospects

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

Senior year in high school and Gary is the middle of the pack. He has average grades and gets an average score on his SAT test. He wants to go to an average school and is just getting started in the college admissions process. The problem is he is not quite sure what he wants to do with his average life and therefore which college would suit him best. He starts out online.

After some thinking on what kind of career he wants to pursue, he decides that he will just worry about getting his associates degree and then decide on a career. He looks at a lot of towns across the country and happily realizes that there are colleges in each of them. He proceeds to go to each of the website’s college admissions pages and prints off application after application. He has thirteen colleges just to be safe, since he is after all, just average. He fills one out. After about an hour of tedious work, he finally finishes filling just one out and puts it in an envelope, ready to be sent.

He proceeds to the next one. The information is very similar to the last application, but he presses on. The next application is almost a carbon copy of the previous one. This experience is similar to getting bounced around to different doctors and having to fill out your history of long medical problems over and over and over again. This is not what Gary wants to do.

He thinks to himself that there has got to be a better way to do this. He goes back to searching on the net.

He returns to the college application sites and realizes that he can just type in all of his personal info right on the site. This way isn’t much easier for him. His tabbing skills are not all they are cracked up to be. He envisions a website where he can put in all the information college admission’s officers need one time and send that information to all the colleges he wants.

He decides to do a search on Google. He puts in apply for college online and some other phrases. He looks through some of the sites, but nothing is to his liking. He decides to be more specific and types in Dartmouth College Admissions and Yale Admissions because both of his smart buddies applied and got accepted there. He thinks maybe they knew something that he didn’t. (Besides being more intellectual than him). He wants something more. He wonders why he can’t find some kind of tool or something that will allow him to apply to any college he wants with a few clicks of the mouse.

“Where could I do that?” he thinks. “What would I have to type in to get search results that show me how to apply to more than just one school?”

He is about to surrender to the whole painstaking process. While he knows just what he needs, finding it has become tedious. Usually Gary never spends this much time on any problem he has. He has been spending many hours trying to find any information and is completely discouraged and distraught. Because of the whole ordeal. He just decides this is just not worth the hassle and only sends in the two applications he filled out by hand earlier. He crosses his fingers and sends them in.

Two weeks go by and he has not heard from either college. A month. Two months. He is graduating tomorrow and that day gets the letters he has been waiting for. He can not wait to find out which one he got into. He opens the letter from a state university first and reads that they regret to inform him that with his information, he has not been accepted. He shrugs it off and opens the one from his 1st choice in colleges. He is shocked to read that he has not been accepted to this one either.

His mom had told him earlier that if he didn’t get accepted into college before the night of his graduation, then she would kick him out of the house. As Gary walks down the isle for his graduation he looks at his mom with a heartbreaking look on his face. She already knew what he was going to tell her. Sure enough, Gary gets kicked out and sent on his merry way. He is forced to get a job at McDrivein’s, where he spends the next ten years. If only he could have found something that would have gotten his name out to more colleges so he could have gotten an education.

To Compare Online Universities

Monday, May 4th, 2009

Although there are many online universities available, choosing the best online university that offers your preference online degree program can be a challenge. You may know what type of program you are looking for, but narrowing your list to the programs that contains the courses which meeting your requirements may be difficult. Here are five considerations which can help you compare online universities based on a few important factors.

1. Compare Online Universities Accreditation

I believe you have seen the word “accreditation” mentioned in many online education guides and articles. It’s the most important factor to consider when comparing online universities. If you earn a degree from an online university with regional accreditation, your degree will be accepted widely in the job market, and it helps you to have easier time finding jobs after graduation. You may want to continue to a higher education in the future, which you most probably will use your degree to apply for graduate programs, and a degree from an accredited online university will enable you to transfer your credit easier because these online degrees are accepted by most schools.

2. Compare Online Universities Residency Requirements

Not all online degree programs are offered 100% online, some universities requires their online students to attend a certain hours of physical classes on campus; others may require once a week for group meeting among students on group coursework discussion, or perform their lab work at school. Hence, when comparing online universities, you need to consider the residency requirements that best fit your schedule especially if you are a working individual or traveling to campus is a concern to you.

3. Compare Online Study Schedules

Although one of the key features of online education program is “flexible schedule”, but not all online universities allow you a full flexibility to study at your own pace, you may need to meet strict deadlines, or you are required to logon to the online classes at a fixed time to attend real-time learning sessions. If you are a working individual who have un-fixed working hours or a frequent traveler for job assignment, then you may prioritize on the online universities that allow you to study fully at your own pace.

4. Compare How Online Universities Carry Out Examination

There are online universities allow students to complete course exams entirely online, with open-book tests, while others may require their students to attend the exams at a proctored testing center. If you prefer to take open-book examination, then online universities that need you to attend closed-book tests might not be the best option for you.

5. Compare Online Universities Admission Requirements

Each online university has it own admission requirements; some schools have a very lengthy application process that require you to attend interviews, writing an essay or get a recommendation letter for your admission application, while others may have simple and easy admission process. When comparing these online universities, you need to ensure you are able to meet the admission requirements before you submit your application.

Summary

Comparing various online universities that offer your preference degree program can be very challenging, but it is a need process in order to select the best online university that meet your requirements.

5 Points Taking Admission

Monday, May 4th, 2009

Joining a Business School is one of the most important decisions that a student or a working professional takes in life. The MBA degree can bring a major change in a person’s career, be it in getting his / her dream job, promoting the person directly to the management cadre of a company or even help in making a complete shift in domain. If you are planning to join a management institute, you will have a tough time deciding which institute to join. Therefore you must take a lot many things into consideration while selecting the institute you will be joining.

This article lists the five most important things that you must consider before taking admission into a management college.

Recognition - This is the most important thing to consider since your career growth post-MBA will depend on this factor. Check if the degree awarded by the Institute is recognized both by the academic sector and the industries. If the institute awards Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) in one of several fields of management, make sure the degree is approved by the AICTE and also has received recognition from the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). If the institute awards MBA then the degree must be approved by the University Grant Commission (UGC). In addition the degree conferred by the institute must have industry recognition which will help you in your career progression.

Curriculum - The most updated the curriculum the more updated you are. Therefore you must check if the curriculum followed in the institute is the most updated one. Many institutes have academic tie-ups with the world renowned institutes such as MIT, Harvard and Wharton which is an assurance that you will be taught the latest curriculum.
Infrastructure - A top rated business school offers truly world class infrastructure wherein students receive all-round education. Check if the institute has modern infrastructure and facilities such as latest communication devices to deliver lectures, fully computerized environment, Wi-Fi and a well-stocked library with access to all the reputed books and journals.

Faculty - This is also an important factor that you should consider before joining an institute. It is the well-educated faculties who will bring in the best curriculum into your syllabus and teach you exactly what is being taught at the best management schools in the world. Many institutes are known to have some of the renowned personalities as faculty. These institutes are always the most preferred destinations of MBA aspirants. Two other factors that you must also consider about faculty is the number of full-time professors and lecturers and the teacher-student ratio. An institute with more full-time teachers and one where the teacher-student ratio is high are more preferred by the students.

Placement - An MBA aspirant is most interested in the placements which an institute’s provides. All the factors stated above have direct impact on the placement of an institute. Find out the companies that regularly visits the institute for summer placements and for hiring students as their employees. Also get some information about the average salary offered to the students.

Once you have sufficient and reliable information about these factors, you can easily rank the institutes where you would like to join and also finalize the college you will get the best return from the course.

Respected Schools

Friday, May 1st, 2009

Accreditation to colleges by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education is awarded to such names as Johns Hopkins, Kansas State University and University of Arizona as well as schools that are more known for their online courses such as Kaplan University, Strayer Online and University of Phoenix.

It is correct. The last three schools mentioned are awarded accreditation by the very same organization as the first three colleges mentioned. If those names don’t sound like they should be mentioned in same breath then there will be salt in the wound when you add in the credibility of a college such as Notre Dame or how about a USA government branch being awarded its accreditation from the same place. Yes it is true. USA Air Force Academy also has its accreditation from the the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

Find accredited college offering on line classes and get an education that is equal to one earned at a recognized campus based school. The tuition is usually lower and you can attend classes at your convenience. However there are some less attractive points a potential student should be aware.

These colleges are basically the equivalent of a Hollywood set. They appear normal in every way but behind the scenes they are all props. Boiled down it amounts to the colleges have gathered all the necessary ingredients to be able to offer students an education which is awarded the same accreditation as those found at established campus based schools but that is the extent of their claim to fame.

Expect that you will have to largely rely on yourself to do things that one might otherwise have thought the school would provide. Especially true if you are taking a course at a college which focuses mainly at on line classes but has some brick and mortar schools placed periodically around the states. Some good examples of what you may have to do for yourself despite the promises from the school that you will not, include finding your own place to do your internship (where applicable to completing your course). Often times the college will have a claim of placing ninety-five percent of the students. Expect that you will fall into the percentage that the school does not achieve successful location and as such you will have to do it yourself.

This is also true of any facilities which are promised to be available. Do not expect those facilities to be as accessible as the college may have claimed. Often times the college will advertise the unabated use of the facilities while you are a student and as an alma matter. What they do not mention is that since they have limited facilities then the ones that exist are almost always in great demand. One such situation the college does make the facilities open to students and former students but the studio is closed on Sundays which as you can imagine really stretches the claim of them always being available. This sort of situation can put stress on your ability to complete class assignments and the school will not care, or accept excuses that you couldn’t get a time slot scheduled to do your assignment before the deadline. It is situations like the afore mentioned where your ambition and desire will be the difference of success or failure. Those adamant about successfully completing their degree will find a way to get past all obstacles.

Employers are the final test however. Would they hire someone holding a degree from an online college? Recently when visiting my personal physician (we are located in Kansas) I enquired if he would hire someone with a degree from an online college such as Devry? The answer was a resounding yes. Any potential employee holding a degree from an accredited online college is going to receive a warm welcome from employers.

School Takes Years Of Planning

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

Admission into an Ivy League school, or equally competitive college, is a lofty goal. It requires years of dedication from both parents and students. These high-powered, historic institutions receive thousands of applications each year yet reject more than 85 percent of candidates. While there is no formula for gaining one of the coveted places, there are a number of strategies, techniques, and hints that give applicants an edge.

Students determined to get into a competitive college must begin their preparation well before their senior year of high school. For example, high powered schools look for students that have completed four years of math, science, and language courses. They expect applicants to maintain straight A’s while taking the most difficult course load their school has to offer. Students who go above and beyond academically by acing end-of-year Advanced Placement (AP) tests not only gain college credits but favor with admission boards as well.

All college-bound students are required to take the SAT I and II and submit the results to their selected schools. However, those applying to Columbia, Cornell, Harvard, Brown, University of Pennsylvania, Princeton, Dartmouth, Yale, and the like should aim for higher than 1400 on the SATs to stay competitive. There are a variety of test preparation classes and materials available in bookstores and on the Web to streamline the studying process - a process that should take place well before the end of a student’s senior year.

Because top-flight universities strive to create an atmosphere of diversity on their campuses, they are interested in students that are academically gifted but mature, confident, and motivated as well. They review applicants’ extra-curricular pursuits, particularly those that showcase a unique ability or leadership position. These activities set applicants apart from the crowd and are not necessarily limited to school sponsored sports. Initiating a food drive, becoming class president, or getting a part-time job can go a long way in illustrating strong ethics, enthusiasm, and perseverance.

The formal application process takes place during senior year and requires a great deal of planning and forethought. Applications must be filled out completely and define the applicant as a whole person, not just as an athlete or a star student. Remember, top-tier colleges want the most well rounded individuals. Students should provide letters of recommendation and write a personal essay that illustrates their ability to handle the strenuous pace of Ivy League life while augmenting campus variety.

If a student is really counting on their first choice school, they are encouraged to apply through early action or early decision programs. These programs require the application to be sent in months in advance and result in a much higher percentage of acceptance. Some programs stipulate that students may only apply to one school through the program and require a deposit, while others are not as binding. Research is crucial, as each school has a different policy.

Whatever you do, don’t assume that an Ivy League education is out of reach. Often, high school seniors are discouraged by the overwhelming number of students that don’t get the opportunity to walk the hallowed halls of Harvard; but, admissions committee members are quick to remind students that they stand no chance of admittance unless they try. You never know what an Ivy League school is looking for. It may just be you.

10 Tips To Select Online Education

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

Your chances for acquiring a new job or getting a promotion are greatly enhanced if your degree is accredited.

How about the qualification of the faculty in the program that you’re interested in? What degrees do they hold? From which institutions? What experience do they have in the subject they teach? Do they have experience teaching online classes? Do your homework and get answers to avoid been taught by other students like yourself.

Support is very important to your success of online distance education program. Make sure you find if any and what level of support you will get from instructors, faculty and technical staff should you have problems with your classes or experience technical difficulties. Select a college that meets your standards of expectations.

Most colleges have their online classes rolling out all the time. This is a great thing and makes learning flexible. As such you should not feel pressured by the admission office or anyone else to start your program right away. You should start only when you feel your mind is set to it. This will ensure you stay motivated and put the effort you need to succeed with your classes.

Be sure you understand whether a certificate or degree can be completed entirely online or whether on site projects, class meetings, or residency periods will be required.

Check if the institution you’re interested in offers any form of financial aid assistance. You may be pleasantly surprised to find out that financial aid, loans and the scholarships available to you. In addition, many colleges and universities offer tuition installment plans which help make college more affordable. Ask before you enroll whether such programs exist.

Take your time to research your best degree option and college out there. Don’t settle for less than you deserve. Unlike there before when online programs were limited, now there are enormous options and colleges to choose from as most traditional colleges are already offering some programs online.

Junior Year Preparation

Monday, April 27th, 2009

Junior year is a hectic time. You’re officially an upperclassman now, and a whole slew of new responsibilities are instilled upon you. You probably have your driver’s license by now and may be working and going to school simultaneously. While you will certainly be busy, you need to keep in mind your college goals and what you can be doing now to make them a reality.

Take AP classes.

You may feel as though your life is tough enough, but taking AP (Advanced Placement) classes offer students numerous benefits. Not only does it look good to do well in an AP class, but at the end of the year, you’ll be given the opportunity to take an AP test. If you pass this test, you’ll receive college credit in that course! Just think of it! You’ll have college credit before even setting foot on campus!

Plus, being consistent from freshman year to senior year with high difficulty level courses shows you are dedicated and committed to your education.

When you’re a freshman in college, you’ll be thankful for the rigorous high school curriculum you took. College is entirely different from high school, so you can look at AP courses as a transition.

Take the PSAT

Review your PSAT materials and register for a time and date to take the test. The PSAT doesn’t count toward your college admission, but it does prepare you for the SAT. It is basically a shorter version of the SAT, but provides you with a real test environment in which to practice the questions and types of questions that will be on the real test.

The PSAT also acts as an application for the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. So, if you are interested in this scholarship, you should definitely take the PSAT.

It is true that it is not required to take the PSAT, but if you want to your best on the SAT, the test that really counts, you should try out your test taking skills on this practice test.

Begin your search for scholarship and financial aid money

Since you’re already signed up for FastWeb, you should be in the know about the types of scholarships you can apply for. But you can also contact your counselor about scholarships that may be right up your alley.

You should also discuss your financing options with your parents. College is a major expense and you need to start saving now (if you haven’t already).

Becoming familiar with the other types of aid available can be helpful as well, so you know application deadlines and what information you need to pinpoint ahead of time. Check to see if you are eligible for a grant or scholarship. Also check to see if a loan is a realistic option for you.

Another financial aid option is work-study, where you will pay for your college tuition by working on campus. There are even tax credit programs for getting through college. Do your research and find the financing options that will work best for you and your parents.

Why make this decision now? Because before you know it, financial aid applications will be due. Stay ahead of the game by learning about all of your options now.

We, at Global Opportunities, not only provide students with expert counsellings but also guide them on choosing the most appropriate course to pursue keeping in accordance to their last qualifications taken which would be beneficial for them overseas as well as if they intend to return back to their home country.

There’s no such things as one size fits all when it comes to study in UK colleges; one can choose from the vast array of courses on offer and you can fashion your own future.
All postgraduate programmes require you to do a great deal of work on your own initiative. On taught courses, postgraduate tutors and lecturers will provide the framework of the course and, within this, you will be able to pursue your own interests. On research programmes, the principal teaching method is original research, which you complete under academic supervision. Writing a dissertation about your research forms a substantial part of the programme. Many UK research programmes now begin with introductory taught courses that provide training in research skills to help you prepare for the advanced research you’ll need to do.

Close contact between students and tutors is a particular strength of all UK degree courses, with opportunities to review your individual progress and discuss any problems. As with undergraduate degrees, UK institutions also provide excellent English language support for international students. Many have language centers where you can use language-learning materials. Many also offer in sessional English classes for international students, focusing on the language and study skills you will need for the work on your main course.
During degree programmes, some specific elements will be compulsory but others will be optional, allowing you to tailor the course to your interests. The core topics of your course will be outlined to you through lectures.

More in-depth analysis will take place in smaller tutorial and seminar groups where you’ll prepare topics in advance and discuss them with the other students and the tutor. You will be assigned your own personal tutor with whom you can review your individual progress and discuss any problems. You’ll need to read extensively around the subject and you’ll be encouraged to form your own ideas and opinions. The close contact between
students and tutors is a particular strength of UK degree courses.

Master of Business Administration (MBA) courses are a particularly intensive, challenging and rewarding form of taught postgraduate course. You’ll be expected to work through a very large amount of material, complete projects and assignments and give regular presentations. Teaching methods characteristic of MBAs include case studies, simulations and business games.

It is very important that you check whether the institution you want to attend is on the Register before you make your immigration application. If the institution is not on the Register, your application will be refused.

The following education and training providers are automatically included on the Register:

those that receive public funding

institutions that are accredited through the British Council,
the British Accreditation Council, or the Association of British Language Schools

institutions that have been inspected and approved by government inspection bodies.

Thus, it is very essential for a student to apply through a higher education consultant who’s a preferred partner of British High Commission as they will not only provide assistance in choosing the right institution to meet your needs as they represent accredited UK Institutions but will be there for you throughout the entire process of your admissions in the UK.
